在回答这个问题前，我们需要读一读官方指南里听力部分的句话：
The Listening section measures your ability to understand spoken English.
ETS非常直白，考的是大家“听的能力”，不是你是否背过某个生僻单词。在听力真题当中，但凡有学科名词出现，如果需要理解才能解题，那么文中一定会给出英文解释，甚至有时候文中的意思会和字典里的释义有些许出入。
例如 TPO23 Lecture3 Q3：
What is the dolphin's melon?
原文是：
Well, turns out dolphins have astructure in their foreheads, just in front of their nasal sacs, called amelon. Now, the melon is kind of a large sac-like pouch, made up of fat tissue.
而字典（牛津字典）里melon的意思是：
noun [C, U] 甜瓜；瓜
a large fruit with hardgreen, yellow or orange skin, sweet flesh and juice and a lot of seeds。
所以你看，就算你背过这个单词，如果原文听不懂，这道题目还是会做不对。这就是所谓的“考察听的能力”。
我们再来看一个例子，TPO17 Lecture4 Q4：
What does the professor say about thefunction of the papillae?
原文是：
They can also mimic the texture ofobjects in their environment. They have these little projections on their skinthat allow them to resemble various textures. The projections are calledpapillae.
而字典（柯林斯字典）里papillae的意思是：
N the small projection of tissue at the base of a hair, tooth, orfeather
发根、牙根或羽毛根组织的小突起物
这里仍然存在字典的释义和实际意思有出入这种困境，唯有听懂文中的解释，而不是死记硬背生僻学科词汇，才能解决这些题目。
